Does WorkCover cover treatment at OnePointHealth?

Yes. We treat workers compensation patients across physiotherapy, exercise physiology and psychology. Your nominated treating doctor refers you, your insurer approves the treatment, and we bill the insurer directly. Penrith carries our largest workers compensation caseload, with all three available on the one site.

What is workers compensation, and who runs it?

Workers compensation covers treatment for an injury or illness caused by your work. In New South Wales it is regulated by the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), and most claims are handled by icare or by your employer’s insurer. SafeWork NSW handles workplace safety, which is a separate job.

The person who manages your treatment is your nominated treating doctor, usually your GP. They decide what treatment forms part of your recovery and write the referrals. Your insurer approves the funding.

You may hear the scheme called WorkCover, workers comp, icare or SIRA. They refer to the same thing from different angles, and you do not need to know which is which to get treated.

Am I eligible?

If your claim has not been accepted yet, you may still be able to start. Insurers can fund treatment under provisional liability while a claim is being decided, which is designed to stop people waiting for support they need. Call us and we will talk it through.

You can usually be treated under WorkCover if:

  • You have an accepted workers compensation claim, or a claim you have lodged that is still being assessed.

  • Your nominated treating doctor has referred you for treatment.

  • Your insurer has approved the sessions, or has agreed to fund treatment while your claim is assessed.

How WorkCover treatment works

There are four stages between a referral and your first appointment. We handle the parts that involve your insurer.

Your doctor refers you.

Your nominated treating doctor decides treatment is part of your recovery and writes the referral.

We request approval.

We send your insurer a treatment plan setting out what is proposed and why. You do not need to chase this.

Your insurer approves a block of sessions.

Once approved, we book you in. Further sessions are requested the same way when they are needed.

We bill your insurer directly.

Nothing is invoiced to you for approved treatment.

What to bring to your first appointment

You do not need all of this to call us. We can usually track down a claim number, and not having the paperwork in front of you is not a reason to put off the appointment. Call us on 1300 123 674.

Your insurer's name and your case manager's contact. We deal with them directly on approvals, so you do not have to.

What will this cost me?

Approved treatment is billed directly to your insurer at the rates set for workers compensation. You will not be invoiced, and there is no gap for you to cover.

Whether treatment is covered depends on how your condition relates to your work injury, not on the condition itself. Your treating doctor and your insurer decide that.

Connected care

Recovering from a work injury is rarely one thing at a time. Connected care means the people treating you work from one plan rather than three.

Chronic pain management booklet

Your physiotherapist, exercise physiologist and psychologist can work from the same plan.

Where your claim covers more than one, your recovery is treated as one thing. Pain, sleep, conditioning and mood affect each other, and progress is easier when everyone treating you knows that.

Only with your consent, and only what is needed.

Your practitioner may coordinate with your GP or your nominated treating doctor where it helps your care.
