Practical nutrition advice, billed to DVA
Gold and White card holders can see a dietitian with a referral from their GP, in person or by telehealth.
Medicare, NDIS, DVA, WorkCover and private health funds accepted.

Can I see a dietitian on my DVA card?
Yes, with a referral from your GP. Gold card holders are covered generally. White card holders are covered where it relates to an accepted condition. We bill DVA directly, so nothing is invoiced to you. Dietetics is available at Penrith, Springwood, Katoomba and Ryde, and by telehealth.

What can a dietitian help with under DVA?
Most DVA dietetics referrals are for managing a condition rather than for dieting.
The common ones are type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and heart health, blood pressure, and gut conditions. For some veterans it is about appetite and weight loss rather than weight gain, particularly where illness, medication or living alone has changed how much cooking gets done.
A Gold Card covers dietetics generally. A White Card covers it where it relates to an accepted condition.
Advice is built around what you actually eat and how you actually shop and cook, not around a meal plan that assumes someone else does both.
Am I eligible?
If you are not sure which card you hold, what it covers, or whether your referral is still current, call us on 1300 123 674. We can check most of it with you over the phone, and you do not need to sort it out before you get in touch.
You can usually access dietetics through DVA if:
How DVA dietetics works
See your GP.
DVA allied health needs a referral. Your GP writes it and it covers a set number of sessions or a set period.Book with us.
Bring your card and your referral to your first appointment. We bill DVA directly.
Nothing is invoiced to you.Your GP reviews at the end of the cycle.
We tell you when you are approaching your last session so you can arrange a new referral before treatment stops.
What our dietitians help with
Whether DVA will cover your appointment depends on your card type and the referral your GP has written, not on the condition itself. Your GP and DVA decide that.
Connected care
Nutrition affects most other things, and your card covers more than one service.
Diabetes care is a team job.
Your dietitian may work alongside a podiatrist or an exercise physiologist, all covered by the same card.
Telehealth works well here.
Dietetics suits video appointments, which means you can see the same dietitian without the trip.
Where you can be seen
DVA dietetics is available at our Penrith, Springwood, Katoomba and Ryde centres, and by telehealth.
Telehealth:
secure video appointments, arranged by phone or enquiry rather than online. If travel is difficult, this is often the easier option.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?
Yes. DVA allied health requires a referral from your GP.
Is there any cost to me?
No. We bill DVA directly at DVA rates and nothing is invoiced to you.
Can I do it over video?
Yes. Dietetics works well by telehealth, and for many people it saves a trip.
Can my partner join the appointment?
Yes, and it often helps, particularly where someone else does the shopping or the cooking.
What if I am losing weight without trying?
That is a good reason to be seen rather than a minor one. Mention it when you call and we will make sure it is looked at properly.
Do I need to keep a food diary first?
It helps, but it is not required. Your dietitian will tell you what would be useful to track afterwards.
