Can I see an exercise physiologist on my DVA card?

Yes, with a referral from your GP. Gold card holders are covered generally. White card holders are covered where it relates to an accepted condition. We bill DVA directly, so nothing is invoiced to you. Exercise physiology is available in our on-site gyms at Penrith, Blaxland and Ryde.

What does an exercise physiologist do?

An accredited exercise physiologist is a university-qualified allied health professional who uses exercise as treatment. It is not personal training, and the difference matters when a GP is referring you.

For veterans the work is usually about getting function back and keeping it: strength after an injury or surgery, balance where falls have become a worry, conditioning for arthritis or a heart condition, and staying capable of the things you want to keep doing.

Programs are built around your diagnosis, your history and your medications. Nobody assumes a starting point you do not have, and nobody is going to put you on a treadmill and walk away.

Am I eligible?

If you are not sure which card you hold, what it covers, or whether your referral is still current, call us on 1300 123 674. We can check most of it with you over the phone, and you do not need to sort it out before you get in touch.

You can usually access exercise physiology through DVA if:

How DVA exercise physiology works

See your GP.

DVA allied health needs a referral. Your GP writes it and it covers a set number of sessions or a set period.

Book with us.

Bring your card and your referral to your first appointment.

We bill DVA directly.

Nothing is invoiced to you.

Your GP reviews at the end of the cycle.

We tell you when you are approaching your last session so you can arrange a new referral before treatment stops.

Bring clothes you can move in and enclosed shoes. Sessions run in our gym.

What our exercise physiologists help with

Whether DVA will cover your sessions depends on your card type and the referral your GP has written, not on the condition itself. Your GP and DVA decide that.

Connected care

Exercise physiology often follows on from something else, and your card covers more than one service.

Physiotherapy settles the problem, exercise physiology rebuilds the capacity.

Where your GP refers you for both, we plan them together rather than handing you over.

Two gyms at Penrith.

Blaxland and Ryde each have a gym on site, so treatment and conditioning happen in the one place.
