Can I see a dietitian on Medicare?

Yes, with a referral. If your GP has prepared a chronic condition management plan, you may be entitled to Medicare-rebated dietetics. Medicare pays a rebate and you pay the gap. Dietetics is available at Penrith, Springwood, Katoomba and Ryde, and by telehealth anywhere in Australia.

What conditions can a dietitian help with on Medicare?

This pathway is for long-standing conditions that nutrition genuinely affects. The most common referrals are for type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes, high cholesterol and heart health, and gut conditions such as coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

What it is not for is general weight loss or a diet plan. That is a private appointment, and you do not need a referral for it.

Sessions are limited each calendar year and shared across all allied health under your plan.

Am I eligible?

You do not need to work this out yourself. Your GP decides whether a plan is right for you, and we can check how many sessions you have left before you book. Call us on 1300 123 674.

You can usually access Medicare-rebated dietetics if:

How Medicare dietetics works

Talk to your GP.

If you have a condition that has lasted six months or more, ask whether a chronic condition management plan is right for you.

Your GP prepares the plan and the referral.

The referral names the service and how many sessions you have.

You book with us.

Bring the referral and your Medicare card to your first appointment.

We claim the rebate on the day.

You pay only the gap, and we report back to your GP.

What our dietitians help with

Whether Medicare will cover your appointment depends on the referral your GP has written, not on the condition itself. Your GP decides that.

Connected care

Nutrition rarely works in isolation, which is why your plan may cover more than one service.

Diabetes care is a team job.

Your dietitian may work alongside a podiatrist or an exercise physiologist, all under the same referral pathway and the same plan.

Telehealth counts.

Dietetics works well by video, which means you can see the same dietitian wherever you are, and you are not limited to the centres closest to you.

Frequently asked questions

Usually not on its own. This pathway is for chronic conditions. If weight is part of managing diabetes or heart health, it will form part of your plan. For general weight support, you can book privately without a referral.

That depends on how your GP divides your allowance, since it is shared across all allied health. For dietetics it is often an initial appointment and one or two reviews.

It helps, but it is not required. Come as you are. Your dietitian will tell you what would be useful to track afterwards.

Yes, where they have a chronic condition and their GP prepares a plan. Ask your GP whether it applies.

Most people continue privately or through their health fund once the plan sessions are used. We will tell you where you are up to before your last funded appointment.

Bring your referral and we will do the rest

Send us an enquiry or call with your referral details, and we will book you in and claim the rebate for you.
