Can I see a podiatrist on Medicare?

Yes, with a referral. If your GP has prepared a chronic condition management plan, you may be entitled to Medicare-rebated podiatry. Medicare pays a rebate and you pay the gap. Podiatry is available at all seven of our centres, and as a home visit.

What foot conditions does Medicare cover?

This pathway is for chronic conditions rather than one-off problems, and for podiatry the most common reason by far is diabetes.

Diabetes affects circulation and sensation in the feet, which is why an annual foot check matters even when nothing hurts. A small cut you cannot feel is a different problem to a small cut you can. Other long-standing conditions qualify too: peripheral vascular disease, arthritis affecting the feet, and neurological conditions that change how you walk.

Sessions are limited each calendar year and shared across all allied health under your plan, so podiatry may be one part of a wider set of referrals.

Am I eligible?

You do not need to work this out yourself. Your GP decides whether a plan is right for you, and we can check how many sessions you have left before you book. Call us on 1300 123 674.

How Medicare podiatry works

Talk to your GP.

If you have a condition that has lasted six months or more, ask whether a chronic condition management plan is right for you.

Your GP prepares the plan and the referral.

The referral names the service and how many sessions you have.

You book with us.

Bring the referral and your Medicare card to your first appointment.

We claim the rebate on the day.

You pay only the gap, and we report back to your GP.

What our podiatrists help with

Whether Medicare will cover your treatment depends on the referral your GP has written, not on the condition itself. Your GP decides that.

Connected care

Chronic conditions rarely stop at the feet, which is why your plan may cover more than one service.

Diabetes care is a team job.

Your podiatrist may work alongside a dietitian or an exercise physiologist, all under the same referral pathway and the same plan.

Footwear and orthotics on site.

Penrith has a footwear store and an orthotics lab, so assessment, fitting and adjustment happen in one place. Springwood and Ryde have footwear stores on site.

Where you can be seen

Medicare podiatry is available at all seven of our centres: Penrith, Ropes Crossing, Blaxland, Springwood, Katoomba, Ryde and Lindfield. Home visits are available across the Penrith area, the Blue Mountains, the North Shore and the Northern Beaches.

Home visits:

arranged by phone or enquiry rather than online. If travel is difficult, or a condition makes it harder, we can come to you.

Frequently asked questions

Not at present. Medicare bulk billing for podiatry is paused. A rebate still applies and you pay the gap, which we work out with you before your appointment.

Your GP sets that as part of your plan. Many people with diabetes have an annual assessment, with more frequent visits where there is a higher risk.

Only for the Medicare rebate. You can book privately or claim through your health fund without one.

Yes. The total is shared across all allied health, so your GP decides how to divide it between podiatry, physiotherapy, dietetics and exercise physiology.

Yes, where a home visit is appropriate. Home visits are arranged by phone or enquiry rather than booked online.

That is often the point. With diabetes, reduced sensation means a problem can develop without pain. An assessment is about finding what you cannot feel.

Bring your referral and we will do the rest

Send us an enquiry or call with your referral details, and we will book you in and claim the rebate for you.
